Do I save on fuel if I put my car in neutral if I see a traffic light some distance away?

Asker: Toon, 69 years old

Answer

Hi Show,

In neutral the engine must continue to run and therefore consumes fuel.
When braking on the engine, in more modern cars the fuel supply is cut off and the engine continues to run on the ‘bulge’ of the car.

It is therefore more economical to leave the car in the highest possible gear.

Kind regards,
Luc.
