The iOS 13 beta is now also available to the general public. That means that you can already get started with a test version of the major update that will only be available in September. The perfect opportunity to test all kinds of new functions, where you may also run into problems. After all, it is a beta version.

For example, the battery life of your iPhone can deteriorate, specific apps suddenly stop working (properly) or a bug can cause unexpected crashes. Very annoying if you install the test version on an iPhone that you use intensively on a daily basis.

Fortunately, if the above is the case, you can always go back to the non-beta version of iOS 12. Note: you need a backup that was made on iOS 12. If you don’t have a backup, you can’t downgrade without losing all your data. Then you have to set up your iPhone as a new device again.

Also check if you have the most recent version of iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC. If you have the backup at hand, downgrading from iOS 13 is very easy.

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC or Mac with a Lightning cable;
  2. Put your iPhone or iPad into recovery mode. This works as follows:
    – iPhone X, iPhone 8, 8 Plus and newer: quickly press the volume up button, quickly press the volume down button, then press and hold the lock button until the recovery screen appears: an iTunes logo and Lightning cable;
    – iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold the lock button and volume down button at the same time. Continue to hold the buttons when the Apple logo appears. Do not release until the recovery screen appears;
    – iPhone 6S and 6S Plus: Press and hold the home button and lock button until the recovery screen appears.
  3. Wait for a window to appear on your Mac or PC. Click on ‘Recovery’ and then on ‘Recovery and Update’;
  4. Wait for the process to complete and restore your iOS 12 backup.
