Downgrade iOS 14 beta: this is how you restore an iPhone to iOS 13

Have you installed the trial version of iOS 14, but would you rather go back to the more stable iOS 13? Which can. In this tip, we’ll show you how to downgrade iOS 14 beta step-by-step.

Here’s how to downgrade iOS 14 beta

The iOS 14 public beta is available. At first, only developers could get started with the iPhone update of 2020, but now anyone with a supported device can already try out the latest functions. However, running a beta version is not without risk.

iOS 14

Every year horror stories emerge about apps that no longer work (properly), batteries that drain much faster than normal and annoying bugs. We therefore recommend that you never install an iOS trial version on a device that you use every day.

Have you installed the iOS 14 public beta, but not to your full satisfaction? Then it is possible to restore the old iPhone software. This process is known as downgrading from iOS 14 beta as it will degrade your software version.

This is how you downgrade from iOS 14 to iOS 13

Before we start it is important to check if you have a backup from your iPhone (with iOS 13). Don’t have a backup? Then you cannot go back to the previous version without your personal data to lose. Of course you can downgrade the iOS 14 beta, but you will have to set up your iPhone as a new device.

Check? Downgrading works like this:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac via a Lightning cable;
  2. Put your iPhone or iPad into recovery mode. This works as follows:
    – iPhone X, iPhone 8, 8 Plus and newer: quickly press the volume up button, quickly press the volume down button, then press and hold the lock button until the recovery screen appears: an iTunes logo and Lightning cable;
    – iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold the lock button and volume down button at the same time. Continue to hold the buttons when the Apple logo appears. Do not release until the recovery screen appears;
    – iPhone 6S and 6S Plus: Press and hold the home button and lock button until the recovery screen appears.
  3. Wait for a window to appear on your Mac or PC. Click on ‘Recovery’ and then on ‘Recovery and Update’;
  4. Then you have to wait a while and restore the iOS 13 backup.

Please note that you cannot transfer backup copies of new versions, such as iOS 14, to a device running on an older version. In short, there is no point in quickly backing up the iOS 14 beta and then downgrading to version 13.

On to iOS 14

This fall, Apple will release the final version of iOS 14 for all supported iPhones. This version is (hopefully) free of annoying bugs and possible teething problems. It is still unclear exactly when iOS 14 will be released, but Apple usually releases iOS updates in September. In the video below, we already list the most important new functions of iOS 14.
