Have you installed the tvOS 14 beta but want to go back to tvOS 13? Then in some cases it is possible to downgrade again. That is how it works.
Downgrading tvOS: this is how it works
Installing a beta version for tvOS always involves risks. Betas always have some bugs and other teething problems. Also, it is not always possible to go back to the older official version, but in some cases it is.
If you have a MacBook that runs on macOS Catalina or newer, it is possible to downgrade from the test version of tvOS 14 to tvOS 13. This only works if you have Apple TV HD. It goes like this:
- Download the latest public version of tvOS 13;
- Save the file to your Mac’s desktop;
- Open Finder and select Apple TV under ‘Locations’;
- Click ‘Restore Apple TV’ and at the same time hold down the ‘Option’ key;
- Then select the tvOS 13 file you just downloaded.
From here you can start the installation of tvOS. Once completed, you will be prompted to reset your Apple TV. Once you’ve done this, disconnect the Apple TV from your MacBook. Your Apple TV is now running on tvOS 13 again.
If you have an Apple TV 4K, it is unfortunately not possible to downgrade to an earlier version of tvOS. Apple TV 4K doesn’t have a USB-C port that is needed to connect it to a MacBook. Apple also does not provide a wireless recovery option for the latest tvOS public beta.
More about Apple TV
On iPhone we regularly share tips and special news about Apple TV. For example, we explain how you can stream your iPad to TV. In tvOS 14 you can do even more with your Apple TV, especially in the area of HomeKit.
You can check smart devices that are linked with HomeKit on your TV. If you have a smart doorbell, for example, a screen will appear on your TV where you can see live who is ringing the doorbell. In addition, tvOS 14 adds a Picture in Picture mode.
