Are you in the iOS 10 beta and tired of freezes and crashes? In this article, you can read how to go back to the latest version of iOS 9.
Why downgrade?
Developers (or users via developers) can now install and use the first iOS 10 beta on their device. A more stable audience beta will arrive in July, until then Apple is working on improvements with developer feedback.
The fact that iOS 10 is still in the first beta is noticeable. Often enough, apps freeze or iPhone crashes for a few seconds. Various apps suddenly lack buttons or search bars, making functions inaccessible. In short: there are quite a few reasons for users to go back to an official version of iOS 9.

Downgrade iOS 10
If you’re going to install a beta, it’s a good idea to make a backup first. That makes downgrading a lot easier, because you don’t have to worry about losing things. You will then go back to the version of iOS you had before you installed the beta, with all the apps you already had at your disposal. The latest stable version of iOS is version 9.3.2.
To move to iOS 9.3.2, you need the firmware file (a .ipsw file). As a developer, you can find this on Apple’s website, but it can also be obtained from third-party websites. On this website for example, you can go for older official versions of iOS. Always make sure that the website where you download is reliable. And very important: make sure you select the right device, otherwise you can make your phone unusable.

After downloading the file, follow the steps below:
- Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your computer via USB;
- Select your device in iTunes and depending on your computer do the following;
- Mac: alt + click on ‘restore iPhone’
- Windows: Shift + click on ‘restore’
- A window will open, select the .ipsw file you downloaded earlier. Downgrading can then be started.
If that was successful, you can then restore your backup with iTunes. You then choose “Restore backup…” and select the file you want to restore. Handy: the newest is automatically selected.
Remove beta certificate
If you have a device of which you want to remove the old certificate for some reason, for example because you have a new beta profile, this is also possible. You will then retain access to the current beta that you are running, but will no longer receive updates for it. You can do this via the steps below:
- Open the ‘Settings’ app on the iPhone;
- Go to ‘General’ and choose ‘Profile’;
- Now select the iOS Beta Software Profile;
- In the next screen, click on ‘Delete profile’.
