Several apps are available for Windows. ‘App’ is a short word for application, which means program. In Windows 10 and 11, all programs are called apps. You can get a new app from the so-called Microsoft Store. You can also download programs from the internet.

The Microsoft Store is Microsoft’s online store. Windows users can download apps, games and movies there with their Microsoft account. They are free or paid. You can find the store via, among other things, the Start button. When you open the Microsoft Store, you see popular apps and games and can browse various sections. Below we describe how to download a free app that you already know the name of. Think of WhatsApp Desktop, Netflix or Ziggo GO.
Install app
Find and install a free app like this:
- Open the Microsoft Store. Click on the Start button > Microsoft Store.
- Open the search function:
- Windows 10: click on the top right To search.
- Windows 11: Click in the search bar at the top.
- Type the name of the app you want to install and press the Enter key.
- An overview of the search results appears. Click on the desired app.
- The details about the app are shown in a window. If you clicked on a paid app, you will see the price. Click the button for a free app To download.
- The app will be downloaded and installed. The ‘Start’ or ‘Open’ button will appear. Click this button to open the program directly.
The program can also be found in the Start menu. Click on the name of the app to launch it.
