The brand new version of iOS is now available as a free update. Before you install it is useful to know whether your device is suitable for iOS 10. New devices from Apple do not experience any problems, but the somewhat older models are no longer supported. View below which devices do work with iOS 10.

  • iPhone 5 / 5C / 5S / 6/6 Plus / 6S / 6S Plus / SE
  • iPad 4 / Air / Air 2 / Pro
  • iPad mini 2/3/4
  • iPod touch 6th generation

If you have one or more of the above devices, you can update them to iOS 10. You can do this via ‘Settings> General> Software update’. Your device will automatically search for the update and if it’s live, you can download and install it using the on-screen instructions.

To download the update, make sure that the device is at least 50 percent charged and that it is connected to WiFi. It is even better to connect the appliance to the power during installation. If you run out of storage space, you can try installing iOS 10 via the latest version of iTunes on Mac or PC. The installation package is often slightly smaller with this route.

Not enough storage space for the installation

For the installation of iOS 9 it was necessary that you had at least 1.3 GB of free space on your device. The beta of iOS 10 required around 1.5GB to 1.7GB – this can vary slightly per device. The update is therefore not huge, but if you have relatively little space on your device, you may still be short. And then you can do a few things.

The easiest way is to see if you have apps on the device that you no longer use or that you can temporarily delete before the update. Via ‘Settings> General> Usage> Manage storage’ you can see which apps you have installed and more importantly: which take up the most space. You can then delete the largest apps that you no longer use.

Another option is to delete temporary data from Safari (the cache). You do this via ‘Settings> Safari> Clear history and website data’. It is also a good idea to run the broom through your photos and videos, as they often take up the most space while probably a lot of them could be cleared.

Over to iOS 10

The first official version of iOS 10 is now live. The recent history of iOS updates has taught us that sometimes this comes with necessary issues, which will then be ironed out in a subsequent update. Especially with an older device, you might want to wait a while to see what the reactions are from other users who have already installed it. It often works better on newer models. There is no rush with the update.

Still, iOS 10 has been in beta for a while, and the Golden Master (the final release before the official update) has been available for a week. So you can assume that the biggest problems have been ironed out by Apple and that the operating system has become faster and better than its predecessor.
