The music platform 22tracks has released a new app, after the earlier version disappeared from the App Store during the relaunch of the platform at the end of 2016.
22tracks app
In October last year, the helm of 22tracks changed. Since then, the music service has been using songs from music service Spotify to stream, in the years before, songs were all uploaded to 22tracks themselves. The music platform’s app disappeared from the iPhone for lack of integration with Spotify, but now it’s back. Users must first log in to Spotify (Premium) and can then listen to music via the 22tracks app.
The idea behind 22tracks remains the same. Users are presented with twelve different genres, playlists within those genres consist of 22 songs prepared by music connoisseurs. Think of journalists and DJs, for example. The lists are updated with different numbers every month. 22tracks is a very simple app to find playlists and learn music. If you hear good songs, you can also add them directly to ‘My22’, your personal playlist that you will also find in the Spotify app. You can also follow other lists via Spotify, which makes the 22tracks app almost redundant.
Findability for smaller artists
Now that services such as Spotify and Apple Music are increasingly offering custom playlists, you may wonder whether an initiative such as 22tracks still has a right to exist. Exactly, say the makers. “Mainstream music and major labels naturally get the most visibility within major music services, while a huge group of emerging and underground artists have more difficulty reaching an audience,” the platform states. “This is where 22tracks comes in handy, by putting a magnifying glass on the best, new and harder to find songs.”
From the filter bubble
Conversely, 22tracks can even help to break the ‘filter bubble’. The music that you listen to on 22tracks (via the Spotify integration) is included in Spotify’s algorithms. “This way they can give the suggestions within, for example, Discover Weekly and Release Radar a huge boost.” We wrote about that Spotify filter bubble on iPhoned earlier this month.
