Emergency call via the satellite function? You can do it with your iPhone 14!

Satellite function for emergency calls

Apple has confirmed that from the end of this month emergency calls can be made via a new satellite function when you are out of range. The function then makes it possible to share a short message with location, even if you are not in the vicinity of a telephone mast. Your location will then be visible in the ‘Find My’ app.

24 Globalstar satellites

The emergency calls are made via Globalstar satellites. Apple announced to invest $ 450 million in the new satellite function. The company has 24 satellites orbiting the earth at the moment. If you want to make an emergency call when you are out of range, connect to one of these 24 satellites.

Sending an emergency call via satellite: this is how it works

To send an emergency call when you have no coverage, it is in any case necessary to have an unobstructed view of the horizon. Your iPhone will then indicate in which direction you should point your phone to have the best range. Your message is then forwarded to a Globalstar satellite.

This satellite sends the message with your location back to a radio station on Earth. If the recipient is in an area with SMS coverage, the message will be sent directly to his or her phone. If not, the recipient will be contacted from a call center by Apple employees.

Free feature (for at least two years)

This feature is free for the first two years. It is not yet known how expensive the service will be after the first two years. The satellite emergency calls will be available on the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max from the end of November.

Initially, the update will only be available in the United States and Canada. It remains to be seen when the function will also come to the Netherlands, but Apple has already indicated that it will also bring the satellite function to other countries.
