More than 60% of the Dutch consume less energy since the start of the war in Ukraine. This is of course due to the high prices, but also to being less dependent on imported gas from Russia and because of the environment, according to a study by Tado.
A study by Tado, active in the field of intelligent climate management for homes, shows that 61.1% of households in the Netherlands used less energy in March than in previous years¹. 58.2% of Dutch tado° users say that saving money is the main reason for reducing their energy consumption. 24.9% want to be less dependent on Russian gas and 16.9% do it because of the environment.
The study looked at energy savings and asked 3,300 Dutch Tado users (a total of more than 15,000 European Tado users) whether recent events have had an impact on their personal energy consumption. Annually roughly € 3.7 billion worth of gas and coal is imported to the Netherlands from Russia². Another source speaks of 5 billion cubic meters of gas³.

Since the war in Ukraine began, governments, businesses and households have been seeking ways to reduce their dependence on imported energy, especially natural gas. The results of the survey show that Europeans are taking energy efficiency seriously and taking action. Of all European respondents who indicated in the poll that they have reduced their energy consumption, 65.6% want to avoid high energy prices, 18% want to be less dependent on imported gas from Russia and 16.4% want to save energy because of the environment.

According to the EU, 79% of a home’s energy consumption is used for heating and hot water, which is mostly gas⁴. This reliance on gas for heating creates a direct link between recent political events and the level of comfort in European homes. The results of the survey show that European households are taking action and actively trying to reduce their impact.
