Erwin’s favorite iOS app of 2020: OkCupid

At the end of the year, all editors of iPhoned their favorite app of 2020. OkCupid was Erwin’s favorite iOS app.

Erwin’s Favorite iOS App: OkCupid

In the past year I mainly used a lot of the same apps as the year before. The CoronaMelder is of course a big newcomer, but that is an app that you will hopefully never have to open again after installation. In addition, I have installed some new apps that are useful in the car, because I started driving again this year. Flitsmeister warns me for speed cameras and stationary cars on the road and I park with Yellowbrick. Super handy.

I have redesigned my home screen. Facebook has finally disappeared in some folder. Google Home just came out of a folder, because I’ve been working on a smart home this year. I also exchanged Google Photos for Apple Photos.

My most used apps have barely changed. I still watch TikTok way too much and keep opening Twitter. I listen to my podcasts in Pocket Casts and music in Spotify. But there was also an app that I hadn’t used in a while: OkCupid.

dating

When it comes to dating apps, of course everyone knows Tinder. In addition, apps such as Bumble, Happn and Badoo are also known, but OkCupid is often forgotten. I think that’s unfair and there are a few reasons.

The biggest reason is that OkCupid’s profiles are much more focused on who you are as a person, rather than just a few photos. OkCupid offers a lot of questions for you to answer. Both questions for your profile, in which you can indicate, for example, what your favorite music is or what you like to watch, and general questions.

These general questions are about all kinds of topics on which you can have an opinion. You can hide or make your opinion public. Everything is included in the score posted to potential matches. If questions have been answered publicly, you can compare them with your own. Ideal, because that way you can immediately swipe someone away instead of finding out much later that that person thinks differently about something that is very important to you.

Not straight

The app is also very nice if you do not fall within the ‘standard’ categories. There are separate apps for gays and lesbians and you can also indicate within Tinder what you are looking for, but if you fall for multiple genders, it is more difficult.

OkCupid has the handy option when setting up your profile: ‘I don’t want to see or be seen by straight people’. That may sound a bit harsh to some, but it’s a godsend for people on the bisexual spectrum. Because you don’t want to constantly run into people who actually don’t want to date someone like you. That makes OkCupid an app for everyone, a place where they can be themselves and potentially find a good match.

But in the end I especially have a warm feeling about OkCupid, because at the beginning of this year I gathered the courage to activate the app and then found love in times of corona. How can I choose another app?
