Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid – more than a wet mop?

The Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid is a robot vacuum cleaner that also wants to take the mopping off your hands. Is that task for the smart device or would it be better to prepare a bucket of soapy water yourself? You can read it in the Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid review.

Let’s be honest: if we can outsource tasks to robots, we prefer to do that. Yes, you pay a lot of money for it, but lying on the couch or not being at home at all when a robot vacuums and cleans the floors in the house, that sounds too good to be true. And when something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

But does that also apply to the Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid? This is certainly not the first robot vacuum cleaner with a mopping function on the market; let’s see how this device fares.

Midranger with premium design

The Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid is a modified version of the X8 that appeared on the market earlier. This is a highly rated vacuum cleaner worldwide, due to a large number of functions and its excellent suction power.

With a price of between 399 and 499 euros (it just depends on when you buy it), you do not get a high-end robot vacuum cleaner at home. So you have to deal with a midranger, but you can’t see that from the outside. The device looks quite premium. It is 97 millimeters high and has a diameter of 345 millimeters. So he’s pretty big.

On top is a LiDAR scanner, with which the colossus navigates accurately through the house. Due to the scanner, which protrudes on top, the vacuum cleaner may not be able to go under everything; but that is not necessarily an exclusive problem. Furthermore, there are three buttons on the device; you activate it, send it back to base and can perform a spotclean.

The latter option gives you the opportunity to thoroughly clean a specific place in the house. That can be useful when you throw breadcrumbs on the floor or when you miss your bread from the packet of sprinkles.

Room for the mop

On the back is a simple collection container, with an opening that connects to the system. That opening cannot be closed; so when you want to throw away the dust from the bin, you have to be careful that something doesn’t accidentally end up on the floor. With 400 ml of space, there isn’t a lot of room to collect that dust. The normal version has a 600 ml container.

Where does that difference come from? Well, the X8 Hybrid has a 250 ml water bowl that also has a thin mop underneath. So that’s where the lost space goes. That is something to take into account in your decision.

Eufy also supplies all kinds of useful accessories for the maintenance of the robot. For example, there is the charging station, including a plastic cover on which the Hybrid rests when you install the mop. In addition, there is an extra filter and you will find brushes with which you keep everything clean.

You can also easily unclip the different parts for manual cleaning. You don’t have to bother with screws and instead you have to deal with click systems. This is all very accessible and after one click you immediately know how everything works.

Quite a bit of suction

Eufy has equipped the Robovac X8 Hybrid with two motors that have a combined suction power of 2000 Pa. That sounds nice and nice, but what does such a thing mean? Well, the higher that number, the higher the suction power. In theory, this device has the power to pick up an AA battery from the floor, as long as it can easily drive over it and there is room for it in the device.

For normal use, it is good to know that the Hybrid takes a lot of junk with it during cleaning. We tested it on laminate and a deep-pile carpet and in both cases we encountered relatively few particles that remained, except for some white fluff.

Crumbs, sugar, soil, sprinkles… It makes no difference to the Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid. The device cleans well. If you perform the tasks weekly or daily, you can be sure that a large part of the ground remains clean. The device can’t always reach everything, because you probably have furniture here and there. The robot does everything it can to get somewhere, but sometimes skips corners when it turns out to be too difficult. Once in a while the vacuum cleaner got stuck between the base of my office chair, but otherwise there are few problems.

Just like similar models, the robot vacuum cleaner has a brush that takes dirt from corners where it can’t reach properly. Sometimes this is due to a piece of furniture, but sometimes it is also due to the round design that does not lend itself to corners. As a result, it usually works out well with that rubbish on the ground.

In the worst case, you have to check a corner every now and then. But you should be doing that the moment you dust the baseboards, right? Anyway, during the vacuum cleaner, the vacuum cleaner can also immediately wipe the floor with a mop.

Mopping for the sake of mopping

The mopping function is special in many ways. It is a modular and optional part and you notice that in everything. You have to manually click the water reservoir, including the mop. This initially suggests that it is a kind of sideshow for Eufy, while it receives a lot of attention in marketing. And with good reason, because people just don’t want to mop. And that’s okay, but unfortunately this robot vacuum cleaner doesn’t directly play the role of the savior. Yes, he makes your floor wet and yes, you can see that it has been mopped, but that’s about it right away.

The mop at the bottom of the device leaves significant marks on the floor. And you see it when the light falls on it. If that is not the case, the floor simply looks fine and clean. But don’t assume that the stubborn stains will disappear. The mop function is too weak for that. You really have to solve this yourself or leave it to an expert.

However, the robot vacuum cleaner can leave a pleasant smell through the cleaning agent and temporarily increase the humidity in the house; but it doesn’t go beyond a superficial cleaning.

What’s really annoying about that mopping function is the fact that it takes the plastic pad that the charging station rests on. This means that the station is moved during cleaning and the device no longer knows exactly where to park itself. You must then help him by putting the station back. After every mopping.

This mopping cannot be set manually. There is one mop option and it is always active the moment you activate the robot. The app does not offer any additional options regarding mopping.

Map in the app

So what does the app offer? Fortunately, quite a few options. The robot vacuum cleaner creates a map of the environment, which you can then divide into rooms and zones. This way you can set zones where the Eufy is not allowed to mop, such as in the part of the room where there is a carpet.

The system isn’t smart enough on its own to stop mopping when it comes to a carpet, so that’s a shame. Those zones are therefore urgently needed. If you make such a zone too wide, the Eufy may skip a part of the room. A nice idea such a mop, but it is not really well thought out (yet).

You can also store multiple cards, making a multi-storey house no problem for the Hybrid. The system itself checks which floor it is active on, so you don’t have to take that into account. You can also manually set the suction power or use BoostIQ, which also takes that task off your hands.

The vacuum cleaner then determines how much suction power is needed. You can also send it back to the base with the push of a button. Cheaper Eufy’s have a digital remote in the app, but this is missing here, unfortunately.

Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid – Conclusion

Overall, we are positive about the Eufy Robovac X8 Hybrid. But then we are mainly referring to the vacuum cleaner part of this package. For 400 to 500 euros you get a powerful model with a lot of suction power and smart functions within the free app. The created map provides a good overview and gives you the space to clean specific places.

The container is a bit small, but it is fine to work with if you empty it more often. Furthermore, the system is fairly smart with furniture and rarely gets stuck behind things.

The added functionality, that of mopping, is somewhat disappointing. This is clearly something that was added afterwards. The app only offers one specific mopping function and continues to work in an automatic mode. You have to click and remove the part yourself; So this is not a really smart system at all (that mopping happens at the same time as vacuuming).

The results are superficial; you can see that it has been mopped, but stubborn stains and streaks remain visible. This is not immediately the reason to choose the Hybrid.

Of course you could, especially if you already have a reasonably clean house or like the idea that you regularly have a mop through your living room. The floor is actually cleaner than if you don’t mop, but you should not expect more than that.

Robot vacuum cleaners and mopping machines are not yet intended as replacements for existing concepts (such as manual vacuum cleaners and mopping), but you can still expect a little more for 400 to 500 euros. If you come across the model without a mop function for less, that is a better option.
