Later this week, the European Commission appears to be suing Apple for abuse of power in the App Store. This is what is going on and this is what it helps you.
European Commission sues Apple
Spotify complained to the European Commission two years ago that Apple’s practices in the App Store were unfair. As a result of the investigation into this charge, the European Commission appears to be indicting Apple later this week. That states the Financial Times.
Companies such as Spotify, Match and Tile have all complained in the past that Apple puts thirty percent of all revenue through the App Store in its own pocket. According to Apple’s rules, app makers are also not allowed to offer alternative payment methods and not even point users to payment options elsewhere.

Apple states that these costs are necessary to guarantee the quality of security and privacy in the App Store. The company recently changed the rules so that app makers who earn less than $ 1 million a year only have to pay 15 percent.
This charge isn’t the only place Apple has to answer for its practices. The company has also filed a lawsuit against Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, for the same 30 percent. However, Apple argues that this lawsuit is part of a PR stunt to spark interest in Fortnite.
What’s in it for me?
As a user, you do not notice much of these practices, because you pay one amount through the App Store and Apple then divides this amount. Sometimes it happens that app makers decide to no longer offer their app in the App Store, such as Fortnite. That does not happen often, because the makers then lose a lot of income.
It is not clear what the European Commission will demand, but Apple may be obliged to offer alternative payment methods in the App Store. You as a user will notice that.
