Expert: ‘All Macs, iPhones and iPads will get Face ID in the coming years’

In the ‘coming years’, almost all Apple devices will have Face ID facial recognition. Not only the Mac, but also the cheaper iPhones and iPads are going to make the switch.

Face is coming to Mac in ‘a few years’

That writes Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman in its weekly newsletter. According to the usually reliable Gurman, Apple’s long-term plan is to equip all devices with Face ID. For example, the iPhone SE does not yet have facial recognition, but Touch ID (a fingerprint scanner).

Mac computers would be the first to make the switch. This is followed by the iPhone SE, iPad Air, ‘regular’ iPad and iPad mini. Gurman claims that Apple is not yet able to give these products Face ID, but would like to.

With the iPhone SE, it would mainly have to do with costs. This phone was updated early last year and is a cheaper alternative to the more expensive iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. The same goes for the iPad Air and entry-level iPad, which are hundreds of dollars below the much more expensive iPad Pro tablets.

On the Mac laptops, according to Gurman, the problem lies with the design. The housing of a MacBook seems to be too thin to place a depth sensor in it. Without such a sensor, Face ID will not work optimally.

Gurman claims that the switch from Touch ID to Face ID will happen ‘in the coming years’. 2021 comes too early, according to the Apple expert, but we may get the first MacBook with Face ID in 2022. It may take longer on the iPhone and iPad.

This is what Apple will come with in 2021

Before that, we will see the iPhone 13 in September. This seems to be mainly improvements in the screen area and battery. You can probably buy the device in four variants, just like the iPhone 12. In the video below we look ahead at the new iPhones from 2021.
