Extra storage and useful features: the best cloud services for students

While studying you will have to deal with piles of files that are all important. These cloud services provide extra storage and help to keep an overview.

Cloud services for students with an iPhone

Using a cloud service not only has the advantage that you can store a lot of extra files. Keeping your important items in the cloud also gives you a lot of extra features. This way you can access them anywhere and anytime on multiple devices and often edit or share them with fellow students.

Extra storage and useful features: the best cloud services for students

Cloud services are also good for backing up your devices. You shouldn’t think about it, but if you lose your iPhone or MacBook, at least you don’t have to start over with your graduation project. These cloud services are easy to use on your iPhone.

iCloud: present by default

If you have an iPhone, you can of course use iCloud. Initially, this was primarily a way to back up your contacts and settings. With the advent of iCloud Drive app, it has also become an excellent way to store files in the cloud.

What’s especially helpful for Apple users is that many apps and software have iCloud integration built in by default. Whether it’s email attachments or presentations you’re working on in Keynote, the option to save it to iCloud is available by default. Your Mac and iPad also work with iCloud by default, so you don’t have to worry about that. Backing up your iPhone can be done automatically with iCloud.

Apple gives 5GB of storage for free by default. If you’re serious about using iCloud, you’ll probably need more space soon. You can upgrade from 0.99 euros for 50GB of space.

Dropbox: well-known choice

When you say cloud storage, you say Dropbox. While many other options are now available, it is still synonymous with remote storage for many people.

Dropbox Collaboration Update

With the Dropbox app on your iPhone, you can easily store all your files in the cloud. You can use it to control large files or take photos and save them as a text note. The great thing about using a big, well-known name is that many other apps offer good Dropbox integration by default. If you want to share files with other users, it’s easy. After all, the chances that they have a Dropbox account are high.

The free Dropbox account gives 2GB of storage space. If you want more, the next option is Dropbox Plus. It offers a solid 2TB of space, but costs 11.99 per month.

Google Drive: Search and Find

Google’s cloud storage isn’t just for Android users. Anyone with a Google account, and who doesn’t, can use it right away.

In Google Drive, you can store all your PDFs, text files, presentations, photos, videos, and more. Google Drive offers extensive options for editing or sharing files with classmates so you can work on them together. The folder structure is easily searchable, so that you can quickly find files again.

Google Drive offers 15GB of free storage for anyone with a Google account. However, it is also used by Gmail and Google Photos, if you use it. If you want more, you can take out a Google One subscription. This is possible from 1.99 euros per month, for which you get 100GB of storage space.

OneDrive

Like Google and Apple, Microsoft also has its own cloud storage service. OneDrive will look familiar to Windows users, but the service also works fine on the iPhone.

With the OneDrive app you can store your files in the cloud, just like with the above services. The advantage of OneDrive is that it works well with other software from Microsoft, such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

OneDrive has a free option that offers 5GB of storage. For 2 euros per month you have 100GB of storage. For 7 euros per month you can buy an Office 365 Personal account with 1TB of storage. You can also use the full version of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook for PC or Mac.

stack

The Dutch stack, from hosting party TransIP, is a small and perhaps somewhat unknown name in this list. Still, it offers some interesting options. The first is that it guarantees that it encrypts all data and stores it on Dutch servers. This way you can be sure that your files are not roaming the world.

In addition, Stack guarantees that your files will not be scanned to analyze users. Only you decide who you share your files with. Stack has a web interface and can be added to your computer as a network drive thanks to WebDAV. Thanks to the iOS app, you can always access your files from your iPhone.

For a long time, Stack issued invite codes for 1TB of free storage. However, all those codes have been forgiven, so new users can only opt for a paid account. The cheapest is 3.03 euros per month for 250GB of cloud storage.
