Extract image from a video

Save single images of your favorite moments from a video with the VLC program.

A video is made up of frames. A frame is basically a still image from a video. Such an image from a video is also called a ‘still’. It’s like a photo from a video. Sometimes it’s nice to make a still from a video, for example when you also want to save a nice moment as a photo.

The video you are using must be on the computer. One of the programs that allows you to create a still is VLC. This program is available for free for Windows computer and Mac. If necessary, read the article ‘Play everything effortlessly with VLC’ for the basic operation of the program.

Extract an image from the video as follows:

Optionally, specify a different folder as the save location.

  • Click in the menu on Additional (Windows) or VLC (Mac) > Preferences > Video.
  • Under ‘Video Snapshots’, behind ‘Map’, click To leaf through.
  • Browse to the folder where you want to save the images.
