In our Oogappels section we put the spotlight on apps that we have been using for months or years and that we really cannot live without. Here you can read why the productive chat app Slack should not be missing on your iPhone.
Slack: the best productive chat app
Chat app Slack is different from WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage, because the service focuses specifically on communication for larger groups. For example, entire companies or – in the case of iPhone – an editorial team.
Although you can send private messages perfectly in Slack, the service is especially useful if you want to discuss something with several people. To keep this as clear as possible, the app has been divided into various parts. First of all, you have Teams, the umbrella name of your company or editorial team to which people can be invited. Once you are in a team, you get access to all (non-restricted) channels.
These channels keep the service clear, because you can create it in a very targeted and unlimited way. Ideal if you want to talk about a specific topic with part of your team, without burdening all your colleagues with it. With these basic functions, Slack is already worth a try, but especially because the service goes a lot further than that, we can no longer do without it.
Ease of use is paramount
For example, the service lets you switch effortlessly between teams, you can upload and share files directly and there is a smart search function. If these basic functions aren’t enough, the app has plenty of integrations that you can add manually. This varies from sending gifs effortlessly to setting a reminder, so that the Slackbot reminds you of something at the specified time.
This way you can also add popular services to your team that you have been using for some time. Your mail account, for example, but also a service like Twitter. With the built-in calling function, Slack makes apps like Hangouts, Skype and FaceTime less necessary. Add to this that Slack works effortlessly on iOS, macOS, Android and Windows and you can be sure that you can still access the service on the road and at home.
This user-friendliness in particular ensures that the service can no longer be ignored from our iPhones. All our digital work meetings go through this app, which gives the service a prominent place on our homescreen and in the dock of our Macs. Slack is completely free to use, although you can unlock a premium version for a fixed amount. It has more extensive options and saves your messages longer. Certainly for smaller teams, the free version is good enough, especially if you want to try Slack sometime.
