Eyeballs # 19: Apollo is the very best Reddit app for iOS

There is a lot to be found on Reddit, but the website can also be quite inaccessible. With the Apollo app you will no longer be bothered by anything.

Apollo is the best Reddit app

Several developers have made bold efforts to make a good Reddit app. Baconreader, for example, is a very nice attempt and at the end of 2016 an official app finally appeared, which is fine. However, these apps are blown over by Apollo, made by an ex-Apple employee.

Christian Selig did an internship at Apple and now makes iOS apps. On his website he has stated that he has been using Reddit for several years, because he finds his news, hilarity and interesting discussions there every day. However, the Reddit apps didn’t do it for him.

Feels at home on iOS

At Apple, Selig learned various techniques, such as a new programming language to experiment with. After the summer months at the company, he decided to put those techniques into practice and create the best Reddit experience for an iPhone.

That worked because Apollo is actually the best Reddit app we’ve used. This is due to a combination of good looks, user-friendly interface and speed. And the app uses features unique to your iPhone, such as 3D Touch and the Taptic Engine.

In terms of design, Apollo really feels at home on an iPhone. The app is modern and sleek, without too many distractions. If you scroll, you will see beautiful images with clear titles in the large mode. Below that you can see how long ago it was posted, how many comments there are and how many points the post has. With the arrows at the bottom right you can give an upvote or a downvote. A compact mode is also possible for a better overview.

Navigate

Navigation is controlled via tabs at the bottom of the screen, including your inbox, profile and a search function. If you press ‘Posts’ once, you will be taken to the messages where you can scroll nicely. If you press again, you can choose from popular posts, all posts or just home. With the latter option, you will only see posts from subreddits to which you have a subscription.

Very handy is that the app also lets you switch between subreddits in a different way. If you tap at the top of the app while scrolling, then simply type the subreddit you want to go to or choose from one of your favorites.

The way the responses are presented is also fantastic. The response system on Reddit can quickly become cluttered, but by adding color lines you can easily see who is responding to what. The editor to write your own reactions and posts is also extensive and practical.

Most of the content on Reddit is viewable in the app’s media viewer, so you won’t be sent to your browser or YouTube every time. Not only is this useful because you stay in the same app, but you can also keep sending your upvotes and downvotes while watching the content.

Pay and a drawback to be remedied

Great is that Apollo is completely free, but you can also pay for the Pro version. If you pay 3.49 euros, you can post yourself, use multiple accounts, the night mode switches on automatically, you can use Touch ID to log in, you can choose a different app icon and there are some extras. So this is worth it. But the app also works great as a free version.

One downside to using Apollo is that Reddit prefers you to install the official app. If you open a Reddit link somewhere, Reddit puts a big picture that you can view this better in the app. You will then be given the choice to open the official Reddit app or continue in the web version. With this Workflow Fortunately, it is also possible to open links directly in Apollo.
