FiLMiC Doubletake: filming with multiple cameras simultaneously with your iPhone

Do you want to film with your selfie camera, wide-angle lens and ultra-wide-angle lens at the same time? It can be the app FilMiC (Pro) Doubletake. Time for a review.

Filming with FiLMiC DoubleTake

During the announcement of iPhone 11 last September, it was already said: the device can film with multiple cameras at the same time. Unfortunately, this was not yet possible with the standard photo app. At the time, a demo was given by the makers of FiLMiC Pro.

The Pro version costs 16.99 euros, but a free version of this app has also appeared in the App Store. This makes it possible to use different lenses at the same time. The app is compatible with the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max).

Only for iPhones with multiple camera lenses

The app can only be downloaded for the above iPhones. In the free version, you choose two lenses to film with. With the iPhone 11, you therefore select which two of the three lenses you will be filming with: the front camera, wide-angle lens or ultra wide-angle lens. With the iPhone 11 Pro (Max), you can also choose the telephoto lens.

When the app developers gave the demonstration at the Apple September 2019 event, the plan was actually to integrate this feature into a multifunctional camera app. That was not successful (in time), so the developers launched the function as a separate app. The intention is to launch the full camera app.

Filming with two lenses

By tapping the bottom left of the screen, you choose two lenses with which you will film. Once you have chosen this one, confirm your choice. At the top right of the screen you can also choose the view in which you see the video: a split-screen or picture-in-picture, where you see one camera over the full screen, and one in a smaller screen. You can move the small screen over the big screen.

You film by tapping the white camera button at the bottom right. Movies are automatically saved in the app. At the top left, tap the SD card icon to view your videos. Both camera perspectives are saved separately from each other. To add it to your Camera Roll, select the videos and tap the camera roll.

DoubleTake does what you expect

The app does what it’s supposed to do, but no more than that. You can record individual videos that you then save to your camera roll, but you cannot edit them in the app. You are supposed to work with the individual videos in an editing program of your choice.

Ultimately, the intention is to do this in the full FiLMiC Pro camera app, but we’ll have to wait for that for a while. Until then, this works fine, but it is still a bit cumbersome if you really want to use it a lot.
