Filter out background noise during a phone call

Since iOS 15, it has been possible to filter out background noise during FaceTime audio calls. Since iOS 16.4, this is also possible for normal telephone calls via the mobile network.

If you want your voice to be heard clearly in a phone call and other sounds to be filtered out, you can turn on voice isolation mode. Then your voice is given priority in an audio call and ambient noise is blocked. Handy, right?

Filter out background noise during phone calls

  • Start a FaceTime audio or phone call
  • During the call, open Control Center on your iPhone
  • Tap ‘Mode’
  • Choose ‘Voice isolation’
  • Exit the console and make the call

Thanks to the voice isolation mode, your voice is given priority in an audio call. The ambient noise is neatly blocked, so the receiver hears your voice better. Handy if you are in a noisy room.

When you want your voice to be heard along with all the sounds around you in a FaceTime or phone call, you can turn on broad spectrum mode. Then during a call, open the control panel, tap ‘Mode’ and select ‘Wide spectrum’.

Also for WhatsApp and other chat apps

The above trick cannot only be applied during a traditional telephone call or FaceTime conversation. You can also change the mode while making an audio call via WhatsApp, Messenger and other chat apps.

Supported models

To use voice isolation or broad spectrum mode, you must have an iPhone SE 2nd generation, iPhone XR or newer. Click here for an overview of all models with spatial audio, voice isolation and wide spectrum support.

Do you own an iPhone 15 (Plus) or iPhone 15 Pro (Max)? Then you benefit from better sound quality during telephone calls, also via FaceTime and apps from other developers. Thanks to hardware and software improvements, ‘Voice Isolation’ makes the sound quality even better and you can be heard loud and clear even during conversations in a noisy environment.
