Since iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, the iPhone and iPad have a special feature related to solving motion sickness. The screen now shows moving dots and balls at the edges to simulate the movement of the vehicle.
This way, iOS and iPadOS try to show the direction of movement, so you can be less likely to get motion sickness. If you find the automatic display of these dots annoying, you can turn off directions for moving vehicles.
Directions for moving vehicles
Moving Vehicle Directions for iPhone or iPad can help prevent motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. The feature consists of dots at the edges of the screen that follow the movement of the vehicle. This reduces conflicting sensory signals without affecting the most important information on the screen.
Built-in sensors in iPhone and iPad detect whether the user is in a moving vehicle, so the display can be adjusted. In this way, iOS and iPadOS attempts to mimic the movement, so you are less likely to get sick.
Disable moving dots on the screen
Moving Vehicle Directions is automatically enabled and available on your iPhone or iPad starting with iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. If you don’t want this, you can change it using the steps below.
- Open Settings for iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to ‘Accessibility’
- Tap on ‘Motion’
- Go to ‘Show vehicle movement instructions’
- Enable the desired option

At: The dots are always visible. Automatic: The dots will appear automatically when vehicle movement is detected. Out: Do not use the function.
You can also add a control to the control panel to manually switch the function on or off. The control can be found under ‘Viewing accessibility’ and can be recognized by the car symbol with a dotted line. In the highlighted article below you can read how to adjust the control panel.
