With more than a million people, Flitsmeister is one of the most popular navigation apps in the Netherlands. But how does Flitsmeister work? And what can you do with it?
How does Flitsmeister work?
Flitsmeister is a Dutch navigation app that has been around for many years. The app has built up a large group of users over the years who pass speed cameras and other things on the road. This creates a navigation app that remains extremely up-to-date and therefore keeps you informed of the current traffic situation at lightning speed. With the tips below you can get the most out of it.
1. Warnings for speed cameras, traffic jams, ambulances and more
The handy thing about Flitsmeister is the enthusiastic community that passes on speed cameras and traffic jams on a daily basis. As a result, you know exactly what to pay attention to while driving. For example, the app provides notifications for speed cameras and section controls, and when there is a traffic jam on your route.
Ambulances that drive with the siren on can also send a report to Flitsmeister, so that you can divert in time and make room. The app also keeps you informed about other situations that may bother you while driving. Think of work, an accident or an obstacle on the road.
2. Navigate with reliable maps
If you open Flitsmeister and tap the magnifying glass, you will end up in the search function of the app. Here you can add a home and work address, so that you can navigate to it immediately with the push of a button.
Handy, because for many people these are the two destinations they navigate to most often. You can also search for other destinations in the search bar at the top of this screen; that are saved in your recent searches that appear at the bottom of the screen.
3. Pay for parking from Flitsmeister
Are you going to park in a parking zone at the end of your ride? Then Flitsmeister will notify you that you can pay from the app. If you drive away again, the app will notify you to stop the parking action. To do this you have to set the parking function once.
- Open the Flitsmeister app and tap the three lines in the top left corner;
- Tap on ‘Parking’;
- Press ‘Enable parking’;
- Follow the steps on the screen to add your phone number, license plate and payment method.
If you choose to pay via the app, you pay 25 cents transaction costs in addition to the parking costs itself. Also handy: you can add extra license plates in the app for free.
According to Flitsmeister, this parking function can ‘almost’ be used throughout the Netherlands and in the future also in Belgium. Do you want to be sure that you can also pay in this way? Then check the map on the website of Flitsmeister.
4. Report speed cameras, traffic jams and more yourself
In addition to benefiting from other people’s reports, do you also want to help make Flitsmeister better? Fortunately, that is very easy:
- Tap the ‘report’ button at the top of the screen;
- You choose what you want to report: a speed camera, for example, or work;
- You can have this done automatically or manually.
Other users can review your report so that its reliability is checked. Do you see a report that is (not) correct? Then you can tap on it and tap on ‘Rate’. After that, confirm whether the notification is correct or incorrect to make the app a little more reliable again.
5. Flitsmeister Pro
Are you often on the road, or do you want to support the developers of Flitsmeister? Then you can consider a subscription to Flitsmeister Pro (8.99 euros per year). You get a number of benefits in return. For example, you can turn off advertisements in the app, upload a photo yourself for your dashboard and participate in promotions organized by the company.
6. View your driving statistics
A nice extra in the app can be found in the side menu as ‘Rice statistics’. In this screen you can see, among other things, your top speed, how long you have driven with the app and the distance you have covered with it.
7. Flitsmeister One
For the fanatic Flitsmeisters among us, there is the Flitsmeister One, a box for your car that has been specially made for the app. You link the One to the app, so that it automatically opens Flitsmeister on your smartphone when you get into the car.
The box with light and sound also gives a warning when a notification is received via the smartphone app. The built-in battery lasts for two years and can then be replaced. The box can be ordered for 49 euros via the website of the app.
8. Support for Apple CarPlay
Do you have a car or built-in system with CarPlay? Then you can also operate Flitsmeister on this. Once you install the app on your iPhone, it will automatically show up in your car. The CarPlay app from Flitsmeister contains almost all functions of the iOS version.
You can of course navigate, you get notifications for approaching speed cameras and traffic jams and the app tells you when an ambulance is on its way. Also handy: in the top right corner you can see the maximum speed on the road you are driving on.
