The AirPods Max are rich in advanced technology, equipped with smart software and designed with comfort in mind. Many of the features found in the AirPods (Pro) are also present in the AirPods Max, which increases ease of use.
Although the AirPods Max have two buttons, it is not possible to manually turn off the headphones. Apple has chosen to always leave the headphones turned on, but they do go into sleep mode as soon as you store them in the Smart Case. Fortunately, it is possible to force restart the AirPods Max in case of any problems.
Force restart AirPods Max
- If necessary, charge the AirPods Max via a charging cable and adapter
- Then press the noise control button and Digital Crown
- Keep pressing this until the status light turns orange
- Then let go and the headphones will restart

Once Apple’s headphones have restarted, you can pair them again with your iPhone, iPad or other Bluetooth devices. The connection may not be established automatically after restarting. You can then connect the headphones manually via the Bluetooth settings of your iPhone, iPad, Mac or other device.
Reset AirPods Max
If your AirPods Max won’t charge or a restart doesn’t fix the problem, you can perform a factory reset. To do this, press and hold the noise control button and the Digital Crown for 15 seconds until the LED light flashes orange and then white. After you reset your AirPods Max, you can connect the headphones to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Activate AirPods Max energy saving mode
When you store the AirPods Max in the Smart Case, it switches to an ultra-low power mode that protects the battery. This ensures that the battery life hardly decreases when you put the headphones away. However, keep in mind that you cannot turn off the headphones.
If you don’t place the AirPods Max in the Smart Case, they will remain ‘on’ and will only automatically enter battery saver mode after two hours. It is therefore important to store the Max after use.
