The free fashion choice was introduced a few years ago in the Netherlands, which offers the benefits for consumers, among other things, freedom and choice, cost savings and flexibility and sustainability. Read here what more benefits there are and whether adjustments will follow.

The VTKE (Association for Telecommunications Final Equipment) is very happy about the conclusion of the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) that the rules on free modem choice in the Netherlands are functioning well and do not need an adjustment. More than three years after their entry into force, ACM considers the current regulations, in which, among other things, the so -called ‘network connection point’ is defined, “suitable for its objective of promoting free choice of end devices”. The outcome confirms that free modem choice works in practice.

End user determines himself
This evaluation follows from Article 10 of the Policy Rule enforcement Decree on end devices, which stipulates that the ACM carries out an assessment of the effect of the regulations at the earliest two years after publication. Thanks to free modem choice, the consumer himself determines the end equipment to be used that is used directly on the connection, regardless of whether a fiber optic, cable or DSL connection is used.

Advantages for end users:
• Freedom and choice: Users can choose end devices that better match their specific wishes-whether it concerns higher speeds, improved security functions or integration with smart home devices. They have access to a wider range that matches various needs and budgets.
• Cost savings and flexibility: By no longer having to rent routers or modems from providers, long -term users save. Moreover, switching to another internet provider becomes easier because they can continue to use their own equipment.
• Greater competition and innovation: Free choice stimulates competition between manufacturers, which leads to a wider and more innovative range of devices that respond to the latest technological developments.
• Sustainability: Devices can be used longer, even with a transfer from provider, which reduces electronic waste. Customers can also opt for energy-efficient equipment, which reduces their ecological footprint.
• Improved security and data protection: Users have more control over their own network security and data. They can decide for themselves which settings and updates they apply, which strengthens their digital safety.

VTKE
The VTKE regards the Netherlands as a precursor within Europe. Now that the ACM has successfully confirmed the operation of free modem choice, the Association calls on other European countries to also establish the right to free choice of final equipment, which has been in force throughout Europe since 2015, binding. In the best case, there would be an EU-wide harmonized arrangement that makes all European citizens the free choice of their final equipment directly on their broadband connection.
The covenant of manufacturers of telecommunication end equipment (VTKE) mainly consists of European medium-sized companies that are committed to a liberalized telecommunications market. The VTKE strives to bring the importance of end equipment to the attention in politics and society, and argues for a stable regulatory framework that stimulates innovation in the sector.
