From Windows 11 back to Windows 10: This is how it works

Don’t like Windows 11? Fortunately, you still have the option of returning to Windows 10. You can do that in two ways. If you want to use the first way, you have to act quickly. Fortunately, there is always a backup option. Going back to Windows 10 from Windows 11 works like this.

It is of course possible that when you install Windows 11 on your older computer, you do not like the operating system. You find the new interface confusing or not nice or the system is too slow for your hardware; and so there are a number of reasons to come up with. But mostly it all comes down to these two options. What can you do then?

Well, if you’re on time, you simply switch back to the old and trusted Windows 10 very quickly. You can do that within ten days. You can read how to proceed in this article.

Go back to Windows 10 from Windows 11

If you are still within ten days – a somewhat arbitrary limit from Microsoft – then follow the steps below to return to Windows 10. Are you outside those ten days? Don’t worry, you can read more about that in this article. Treat the first option first.

  • Open the settings and go to the heading System
  • Scroll down until you see the heading for system recovery sees
  • Under that heading you will see the option Go back to an earlier version of Windows
  • Click the button in this bar to go back to the old version
  • Now a window will appear and you have to click Next one click after you’ve made a choice
  • As soon as Windows asks if you want to check for updates, you indicate that you do not want that
  • Now click twice on Next one and confirm your choice to start the process

It is, of course, advisable to provide your system with a backup. All your files should be untouched and so should your settings. But if things go wrong, that backup is of course nice.

And outside those ten days?

If you fall into the category of people who don’t make it in time, you still have a good option up your sleeve. Namely, simply reinstall Windows 10.

After the installation you start all over again and you will no longer have access to old settings and files. So make sure that everything is backed up somewhere, so that you at least have your files quickly at hand.
