Google can now tune your guitar: this is how it works

Google Search has a new built-in function that allows you to tune a guitar, or any other instrument. Google listens to the notes and tells them when to sound a little higher or lower. We explain how it works.

There are many apps in the Play Store that allow you to tune a musical instrument. They use your smartphone’s microphone to display in real time which musical note is being played. But why install a separate app when Google has a simple tool in its search results?

Google can now help you tune your musical instrument from your browser, that writes Android Police. The feature is available on the Google mobile site, as well as on desktop. As long as your device has a microphone, the tool can work. Although the quality of the microphone does play a role in the accuracy, and in many cases the microphone on your smartphone will work better than on a PC.

If you want to use the tuner, you have to give your browser the necessary permission to use your microphone. In the steps below we explain how to tune instruments with Google.

  1. Enter the following search query into Google: google tuner, and confirm
  2. Choose the icon with the crossed out microphone
  3. Go for To allow
  4. If you’re using a phone, choose While using the app. On desktop you can skip this step
  5. You can now tune your instrument and Google gives guidelines
