Google will recognize images with Google Lens in its search engine on desktop. The function is already visible to some of the users. You can upload an image from your PC and Google will then show relevant search results.

Google may be expanding the functionality of its search engine on desktop with Google Lens. The function is then integrated in the search bar of the search engine next to the microphone icon with which you can search via a voice command, which discovered 9To5Google.

Google Lens is a service that revolves around smart object recognition and artificial intelligence. On phones, Lens can show relevant information based on an image, the context on your phone screen or an image with the camera.

That is how it works

In a desktop example, we see Lens analyzing a screenshot of the PC game League of Legends. Lens recognizes the popular game and then displays images similar to the screenshot. There is also the option to request search results about ‘League of Legends’. Those results are then opened in a separate tab.

The features of Lens in the search engine on desktop are clearly more limited compared to Lens on phones. You can only upload an image from your PC to release it onto Lens and there is no option to use the webcam or analyze an image on your PC screen. What you can do after uploading an image is to select a part of the image that Lens will focus on.

We expect Google to make the feature more widely available and improve it in the coming weeks and months. Lens also got a spot in the search bar widget on phones last year.
