Google is rumored to be working on a new Nest Hub that consists of a dock with a tablet. The smart display would be launched this year.
Google Hub with detachable tablet
Google has released three smart displays so far. Those are the Google Nest Hub in 2018, the Google Nest Hub Max in 2019, and the Google Nest Hub 2nd gen with Sleep Sensing in 2021. Nest Hub Max with a 10-inch screen and a camera has unfortunately never been launched in the Netherlands and Belgium. Details are now emerging about the fourth member of Google’s Nest Hub series, a source reports to 9to5Google†
According to that source familiar with Google’s plans, the next Nest Hub will have a detachable screen that can be used as a tablet. That tablet can then be placed in the dock with speaker when not in use. This makes it easier to control your smart home devices.
New form factor makes sense
The new form factor makes sense since Google has also recently added several changes to the Nest Hub Max interface. For example, if you swipe up from the bottom of the screen on the Hub Max, you’ll see a row of web apps above the settings bar. Then from there you can open a grid of full-screen icons, like a launcher but with shortcuts. In addition, Google has added a Gboard-style keyboard to the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max.
All in all, these software adjustments seem to complement the arrival of a Nest Hub with a detachable tablet. And of course there are still plenty of question marks about the tablet. Is it an Android tablet with access to the Google Play Store, or is Google finally going to switch completely to Fuchsia? That is Google’s experimental operating system that works with various smart devices: from laptops, to telephones and smart displays. Finally, there is a chance that the Nest Hub 4nd gen will simply remain a kind of remote control that gives you easy access to your smart home in the house.
What do you hope to see in the new Google Nest Hub? Can it become a dock with a tablet and why would you find that useful? Let us know in the comments below.
