Recently Google Maps has had a major update. As a result, even more useful functions have been added, in addition to the existing (hidden) functions that you may not have known about. We have listed seven useful functions for you.
This way you get everything out of Google Maps
At the beginning of February 2020, the popular navigation app from Google received a major update. As a result, you now see the speed limit while navigating, among other things. But there are many more useful features in the navigation app. These tips will help you get the most out of Google Maps.
1. Music integration: link your favorite music app to Google Maps
Do you often listen to Spotify or Apple Music in the car? You don’t have to switch apps if you want to put on or skip a song while navigating. It is possible to integrate your favorite music streaming service with Google Maps. This feature is hidden in the app settings.

To do this, tap the avatar of your Google account in the top right of the app and then tap settings. Tap ‘Navigation’, then tap ‘Music playing app’. Here you can link your favorite music app. The first time you have to give the app access to your music library. You will then see a Spotify or Apple Music widget at the bottom of the app while navigating.
2. Share your route and progress
It is possible to share your route so that others know exactly when you arrive at your destination and where you are now. This way, others are kept informed without you having to do anything while driving. This allows you to pay close attention to the road without being distracted.
You share your journey by swiping up the menu at the bottom of the screen while navigating. Here you can choose ‘Share journey progress’. Then tap the person with whom you want to share your route. The recipient will be sent a link that shows your route on the map, with an icon where you are at that moment.
3. Report accidents, traffic jams and speed traps
To keep the app up-to-date, it is possible to report accidents, traffic jams and speed limits. This also keeps other road users informed and improves flow. If you come across something remarkable, you can easily pass it on during your trip.

To do this, tap the plus icon on the right of the screen and indicate the type of incident and confirm your input. If several people do this, other road users can bypass traffic jams, so that the traffic jams are resolved faster. Of course, make sure that you do this safely, for example when you are standing still.
4. Set parking location
When you use Google Maps, you will never have to forget where you parked your car again. You can set your parking location in the app. At the end of the day you will see exactly where to go. You can also automatically save your parking location, so you never have to think about it again.
When you have parked the car, tap the blue flashing bubble that indicates your current location. Then choose ‘set as parking space’, after which a purple pin with a P will appear on the map. To set up a parking location automatically, go to Settings via your account at the top right, tap ‘Navigation’ and scroll down. Here you enable ‘save parking space’ to automatically save it.
5. Navigate at Schiphol with Google Maps
Did you know that you can also use Google Maps at Schiphol to find your way? The complete airport can be seen in Google Maps. For example, search for a specific store, gate or your baggage belt. The numbers at the bottom left show the different floors.

When you are at the airport, you can see step-by-step instructions on how to walk. To do this, you must be connected to the WiFi network of Schiphol, so that your location can be determined. If you are looking for a specific location within Schiphol, you will immediately see how long it will take to get there. This way you never have to arrive at your gate too early or too late.
6. Choose the type of route for public transport
Google Maps also gives you the option to find a wheelchair accessible route. To do this, enter a destination and tap the tram icon to see the best routes for public transport. Tap ‘Options’ on the right, then tap ‘Wheelchair accessible’ to see only the routes that are suitable for a wheelchair.
What is the best route according to Google Maps is selected by default, but sometimes that is not entirely correct. It may be shorter to transfer three times, but it may also be that you are five minutes longer on the road with one transfer. That is of course a lot more comfortable. That is why you can also choose ‘Fewest transfers’ or ‘Least far walk’ under options. This way you always see the shortest route.
7. Google Live View
The AR glasses from Apple are still waiting, but Google Maps does have an augmented reality function for iPhones that support ARKit. The bottom line is that most recent iPhones can use Live View. You activate Live View by tapping ‘Live View’ at the bottom of the screen during a running route.

You will then see through your camera the street where you are walking, with a large arrow in the middle if you have to turn. It is of course wise to also pay attention to the road and not continuously walk your iPhone in front of your face. The function is mainly intended when you are at an intersection and no longer know which way to walk.
