Google unexpectedly introduced its new Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell. Both devices can work without mains power and with battery. There’s also a Nest Cam equipped with a Floodlight, so you can keep an eye on things at night too.
Google Nest Cam
It’s been coming for a while, but Google is now making it official in a press release: a whole slew of new Nest products are coming our way. A new Nest Cam (wired or battery powered) the Nest Cam with Floodlight and the new Nest Doorbell. We discuss all these new things in detail in this article.
First of all, there is the Nest Cam, which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. You place it on a standing foot or mount it against a wall. Thanks to its IP54 certification, it is well protected against bad weather conditions.
Wired or on battery?
Furthermore, you only have to choose whether you want a model that only works on mains power or the new variant that works on battery. For the first time, Google allows you to mount the Nest Cam in places where there is no power cord. The model with battery can also be connected to mains power, but if the power goes out for a while, it switches to its battery. With normal use, Nest Cam can last for 3 months after a single charge.

Nest Cam with Floodlight
Those who like to be in the spotlight should take a look at the Nest Cam with Floodslight. It works the same as the wired Nest Cam, but comes with two spotlights on either side. This is ideal for filming extra well in the dark, but also, for example, to show visitors the way to the front door safely at night.
Nest Cam – specs and smart features
If we take a look at the technical side, we see that Google uses a 2 MP camera in its security camera and a 1/2.8 inch sensor. The new Nest Cam can take images at a 130-degree angle and it also has 6x digital zoom.
Videos are shot at 1080p resolution and there is support for HDR. For example, he should be able to take good images in difficult lighting conditions. The device also works with infrared in the night vision function, and can then take clear images up to 6 meters. Google also states that the Nest Cam has a high-quality speaker and microphone so that you can easily have conversations with the person in the picture using your phone.
Smart Features
As we have come to expect from Nest products, the Nest Cam also comes with a range of smart functions this time around. Think of motion detection with a horizontal field of view up to 110 degrees wide and up to 7.5 meters away. In addition, it not only works with your phone, but can also display images on the Google Nest Hub smart displays. With a question to the Google Assistant you can immediately request live images.

In the event of a power or Wi-Fi outage, the Nest Doorbell, Nest Cam (battery), and Nest Cam with Floodlight will use their local storage capacity. An hour of events fits into this, which is usually enough for a whole week. The Nest Cam (wired) also records locally if your Wi-Fi network is temporarily unavailable. When the connection is back, the devices upload your events to the cloud so you can see what happened.
Nest Aware
You can view your video history for free up to 3 hours ago. To view older images, you must first subscribe to Nest Aware. With a Nest Aware subscription, you can unlock even more features: extend event history from three hours to 30 or 60 days, or keep 24/7 continuous video history on wired Nest Cams with Nest Aware Plus.

Google Nest Doorbell
Google’s Nest Hello video doorbell will also receive a successor. This time it’s simply the ‘Nest Doorbell’, without the greeting. Google is releasing the device in one model that can run on both battery and AC power. If you choose to use it wirelessly, you can pair the device with a Nest smart speaker to hear the sound in your home. If you opt for a wired connection, you can use your existing bell sound.
When someone rings the doorbell, you get a notification on your phone. Thanks to the built-in microphone and speaker, you can have a conversation with the people at your door, wherever you are. On the other hand, you can also choose a pre-recorded response if you don’t feel like talking for a while. Furthermore, the Nest Doorbell can also watch over your home, because it sends notifications when it detects a person, a package, an animal or a vehicle. The doorbell can distinguish these different things from each other.

Nest Doorbell Specifications
The Nest Cam Doorbell has a 1.3 MP sensor, 6x digital zoom and can take images with a 3:4 ratio. It does this in a resolution of 960 x 1280 pixels and it also comes with HDR and night vision. With night vision, the camera can film up to three meters at night. The doorbell can capture images at a wide angle of 145 degrees, and as expected it is weatherproof thanks to its IP54 certification. Google says you can use the Nest Doorbell for 3 months with normal use.
The Nest Doorbell works like the Nest Cam with the Nest Hub smart display. You can request images up to three hours in the past, and if you want to consult older videos you will have to rely on the Nest Aware subscription again.
