Google now protects old phones from unused apps

Google will now remove all permissions granted from unused apps on older smartphones. The company wants to protect the privacy of users. Developers are then given the option to build an exception in their app if necessary.

unused apps

It had been announced for some time, but Google now protects phones with Android 6 Marshmallow up to and including Android 10 against apps that users have not opened for months. Previously, such apps kept their rights, but now Google itself is revoking them after a few months of inactivity, you know that Chrome Unboxed

The new measure is part of a Play Store update and more precisely the Play Protect virus scanner that protects Android phones against malware in apps. You can also set an exception for certain apps via the Android settings so that they never lose their rights. Or you can view your unused apps there and revoke the permissions yourself. This is how you do it:

  1. Open the Google Play Store
  2. Press it your Google account profile icon
  3. Choose Play Protect
  4. Tap the in the top right settings icon
  5. Choose Permissions for unused apps

App exceptions

And on the other hand, there are of course examples of apps that you rarely or never open actively, but which are intended to work in the background. An example is a battery monitor app or some phone call recorders. Developers can build an exception for these types of apps and Google approves it in the Play Store if it is also justified.

The fact that Google automatically removes the rights from unused apps for privacy reasons is not entirely new. The measure was proposed as part of Android 11 and has therefore been available for some time on phones with that Android version or a more recent version.
