Google requires at least 2 GB of RAM on Android phones and tablets

Google comes with stricter rules for manufacturers who want to release a phone or tablet with Android 13. It is now required that those devices have 2 GB or more of RAM.

2 GB RAM required

Google is putting an end to new phones and tablets that still come with 1 GB of RAM. It is no longer possible to make such a device work with Android 13, nor with Android 13 Go, which is the lighter version of the operating system, which Google will propose later. Jason Bayton, a chief product officer at Google announced the news on Twitter.

The storage limit remains quite low, because a phone or tablet must contain at least 16 GB. Some flagships today come with 16 GB of RAM on the market. Still, the choice to no longer allow 1 GB of RAM is a completely different matter, because unlike with the limited storage, Android just doesn’t run smoothly enough with such a limited amount of RAM. It causes delays and apps quickly crash when multitasking. That is apparently not the user experience that Google wants to deliver with its operating system.

No update possible

Fortunately, today we see that most Android phones and tablets actually have at least 2 GB of RAM on board. Devices that still have 1 GB of RAM and are running Android 12 cannot be updated to the latest version. Although the chance to receive a version update at all is almost non-existent with such phones.

It is important to clarify that the new requirements do not apply to devices with Wear OS, Android TV or Google TV. It happens regularly that Google adjusts the requirements for its software, and that did it recently even before Android Auto.
