In their own words, Google stops thermostats in Europe because heating systems in Europe are unique and different requirements for both hardware and software. This makes it difficult for the search giant to develop suitable products. For that reason they have decided to focus on other markets.
Google Stop Nest thermostats in Europe
In a blog post, Google reports with the sale of thermostats in Europe, and the support will also be limited from 25 October 2025. The reason is to meet various hardware and software requirements. It is true that the boilers in the United States function differently than in Europe. Perhaps Google no longer has a priority for the European market, because the competition here is very large.
Functions old models are limited
On October 25, 2025, support for Nest thermostats from 2011, 2012 and 2014 will stop. It is good to know that only the 2014 generation was officially sold in the Netherlands. You could purchase the first generation (2011 and 2012) via a detour.
As soon as the support stops, you can no longer operate earlier generations of thermostats via the Nest app or with Google Assistant. Smart online functions, such as automatically lower heating when you leave or operate remotely, no longer work. You can still operate the thermostat locally when you are at home. This way you can still continue to use the nest and manually adjust the temperature and diagrams.
Newer generations continue to work
Do you have a Google Nest thermostat of the 3rd generation (2015) or a Nest Thermostat E (2018)? Then nothing will change for you in Europe for the time being. Google indicates that these devices continue to receive updates and keep working as you are used to. Nevertheless, the question is for how long, it may be that the company decides in the future to also stop supporting these models.
