Google teases messaging app news at I/O conference 2022

News about messaging apps, security updates, and improvements to how all your different devices work together is what Google wants to talk about at its developer conference. The company teases that in a tweet and we discuss our expectations.

Google I/O software

In a tweet, Google gave a sneak peek of what to expect in terms of software announcements at its developer I/O conference, which will take place on May 11. As you could read in our preview of the event, a lot of hardware has already been leaked, but in fact Google I/O is primarily about improvements for Google services. Only little information has been leaked in that area in the previous weeks and months.

Until today, because Google has now given us at least an insight into four themes in the field of software that will play an important role. Google lists them in a tweet from the Android account on Twitter:

  • Security updates
  • Messaging updates
  • Updates on cross-device features
  • New collaborations

This is what we expect

Security updates are always an important topic when it comes to Android. Google can talk about new developments around Project Mainline or about other ways to combat the fragmentation of Android versions. By that we mean the issue where older versions of Android remain in circulation. And improvements to cross-device features may affect the way Chromebooks and Android devices work together. In January, Google already made announcements about an improved integration.

Then there’s the “partnerships” section, and Google may be talking about the new partner companies that are building Chromecast support into their products. The company already talked about this at the beginning of this year. Furthermore, the company could also introduce Google TV on more brands of televisions, or it could offer Stadia with partners.

Finally, there’s the “message services” part, and given Google’s difficult history with such apps, that aspect raises the hairs of some tech fans. Primarily, we expect improvements for Google Chat and Messages. Google had asked in its tweet which of these features Android users are most looking forward to, and cross-device functions took a narrow win there. Which aspect are you most looking forward to? Let us know more in the comments. Also read about our other expectations for Google I/O Wednesday.
