Google to make Material You theme system mandatory for Android 12 devices

The Material You theme is an important part of Android 12, but not every manufacturer adopts this theme system in its software shell. According to the latest reports, that could be about to change.

What is Material You in Android 12?

Android 12 is all about Material You. It’s a dynamic theme system that lets you instantly change the colors of your phone’s interface to match the colors of the wallpaper you’ve set. You can also choose your own color themes based on color palettes. The clock, widgets and quick settings, among other things, will adopt those colors. This also applies to the Google apps and other apps that can be found in the Play Store. This way you get a more uniform whole. However, not everyone is a fan of it, because the system is still somewhat limited in terms of customization options. The arrival of Android 13 may change. In this version, Google is said to have planned four new color combinations for its Material You.

Smartphone brands are currently not obliged to adopt those so-called ‘Dynamic colors’ from Material You. Here you will find a list of manufacturers that are taking over the theme system, and Samsung is the big absentee. Samsung has a similar function in One UI 4.0, but the brand uses its own system for this. The downside is that your background colors are not expected to show up in third-party apps optimized for Material You.

Google to make theming system mandatory

Google now plans to make its dynamic theme system mandatory starting March 14 for all devices running on Android 12 or getting that update. This way, all of Google’s apps look the same on different phones.

If the devices do not comply with this, the manufacturer will no longer be eligible for Google Mobile Services (GMS). Google apps can then no longer be supplied on that device. That reports Android Police. So manufacturers must somehow implement this system, which Google called “Monet” in the development phase, in their phones running Android 12. They’re given a little over a month to do this.

What do you think of this obligation that Google wants to impose on smartphone brands? Will it help give Android 12 a more unified experience? Let us know in the comments below.
