Owners of the Chromecast with Google TV or a TV with this system can finally count on user profiles. This gives individual members of a household access to personalized information.
1. Google TV finally gets user profiles
Just like with Netflix and Disney+, it will soon be possible to use Google TV with several people. You can already add more than one account to sign in to services with multiple accounts, but the recommendations on the Google TV home screen are based on the activity of the primary account.
The new function ensures that each member of a household will receive personal recommendations. They can then immediately continue bingewatching a series without having to look it up first. Also important, the Google Assistant then responds to the individual family members because the smart assistant is linked to their account.
This is finally a response to a much-requested feature that should have been present on the platform since the launch of Google TV.
2. Useful information on Atmosphere mode
In addition to the user profiles, the Atmosphere mode (ambient mode) of Google TV will also be upgraded. The mood mode is the screensaver of Google TV and here you can make a selection from Google Photos, an art gallery and experimental new sources. Google extends this screen with maps. On these cards you will find personalized information and recommendations. Think of the weather, news and calendar appointments. Google wants your TV to keep you up to date with information based on your profile.
You can scroll through the on-screen cards to instantly view your photos or listen to music or play podcasts. If you are away from the TV for a while, Google TV will switch back to ‘picture frame mode’ after a few minutes.
The functions Google TV’s Live and For you will also get more options, but unfortunately they are not yet available in the Netherlands and Belgium, because Google TV has not yet been officially announced here. It is striking that Ziggo has been offering the Chromecast with Google TV for a second or third TV since Monday.
The user profiles will be available worldwide, and the Atmosphere cards will only come to the United States for the time being.
