New privacy features are coming with the Android 13 update. Apps are no longer just given permission to use your phone’s entire media storage. Only those stricter rules do not apply to older apps. Google is now making users aware of this with a warning.
Android 13 Warning
The third beta version of Android 13 is available, or the penultimate update before we get to see the stable software. Google mainly puts the finishing touches on the ‘i’ and does so with its new permissions. Since the first beta version, the media storage has now been split between phones, but that also brought problems.
An audio editing app doesn’t need access to your photos and that’s why the media permissions had to be split. From now on there are permissions for: audio files, videos, images and photos. Older apps not adapted to Android 13 still use the old permission that entitles them to view all types of media.
That is not ideal and Google therefore shows a warning with such apps, which noticed Esper on. In the notification you will see that the app in question is in fact outdated and has too many permissions. After that you can confirm to grant all those permissions, or you can go back.
Strictly for (old) apps
With Android 13, Google is drawing a line that is remarkably strict for older apps. Apps that have not been updated for two years will disappear from the Play Store. In addition, even more improvements have been made in terms of permissions. With Android 13, apps must first ask for permission before they can send push notifications to users. So you are no longer unpleasantly surprised by notifications from apps that you hardly use.
What do you think of Google’s new permissions in Android 13? Are they another step in the right direction? Have you tested these Android 13 beta versions or are you planning to do so now that the more stable updates are rolling out? Let us know in the comments.
