Green coffee: preparation, taste and effect of the drink

Green coffee is advertised by many manufacturers as a miracle cure for losing weight. We’ll tell you here whether this is true, how it tastes and how you prepare it.

What is green coffee?

It is common in most cultures to make coffee from roasted coffee beans. But it is also possible to make a coffee from raw coffee beans. Because coffee beans are green before roasting, coffee made in this way is called green coffee.

In contrast to roasted coffee, green coffee is not considered a luxury food. It is particularly popular with health-conscious people because it is marketed as a slimming product. It is often used as an extract in capsule or powder form, like dietary supplements. The taste of green coffee cannot be compared to that of roasted coffee. It has a very sour taste and is more like a bitter green tea. Very few people find joy in it straight away, so many refine it with spices to make it edible.

The preparation of green coffee differs from that of roasted coffee. As a rule, it is made from whole coffee beans. Soak them in water overnight and then boil them in fresh water for 10-15 minutes the next day. Depending on your taste, you can add spices, sugar or milk to alleviate the bitter taste. If this method of preparation is too complex for you, you can also use green coffee extract. With this you can prepare green coffee in the same way as roasted coffee.

Does green coffee help you lose weight?

Green coffee is more similar in color and taste to green tea than roasted coffee.

Manufacturers and many health portals are promoting green coffee as a true miracle cure for losing weight. In fact, many scientific studies deal with this topic. British scientists have summarized all study results in 2011.

The result was that green coffee is not a miracle cure, but can still help you lose weight. Overall, test subjects who supplemented their diet with green coffee extract lost more weight than the comparison groups. However, depending on the study, it was only 0.72 to 4.23 kilograms more weight loss. However, more stringent, longer duration studies are needed to confirm effectiveness.

If you would like to try green coffee for yourself, the best thing to do is grab an organic product. This is how you ensure that coffee farmers get a fair price for the beans. However, it is not worth spending a lot of money on dietary supplements with green coffee extract. Green coffee helps to lose weight only to a limited extent. In order to lose weight healthily in the long term, changing your diet is essential and far superior to any supposed miracle cure.
