It is restless around TikTok. On the one hand, Microsoft seems to have a serious interest in the US arm of the fast-growing video app. On the other hand, Donald Trump would rather lose TikTok than be rich. The US president has threatened to shut down the Chinese app in his country.

Exactly how this will all turn out remains to be seen, but perhaps this is a good time to poke around the competition. These are four possible TikTok alternatives for your iPhone.

1. Byte

Byte is the spiritual successor to Vine, one of the first video apps to really hit the mark. Just like TikTok, Byte is all about making and watching very short videos. Movies last up to six seconds and can be edited to your heart’s content with animations, fun effects and songs.

In addition to making videos, you can of course also just watch. Byte may present interesting videos via the Explore tab. The video app tries to distinguish itself from TikTok by paying creators for their videos.

2. Instagram Reels

Better copied than badly conceived, shall we say. Since August 2020, Instagram has Reels, a direct competitor to TikTok. Reels are short videos of up to fifteen seconds that you can make via the Instagram camera.

After you’ve recorded a movie, you can edit it with effects, animations, timers and audio. You then share reels with your followers on Instagram. They may also end up in the Explore tab of the app, which allows you to reach millions of audiences.

3. Dubsmash

Dubsmash is a veteran in the world of video apps and has long competed with TikTok’s predecessor Musical.ly. Since that app changed name, Dubsmash has fallen behind a bit more, but the app is nevertheless on millions of phones worldwide.

Just like with TikTok, you can make and watch short films (of ten seconds) in Dubsmash. The app’s algorithm tries to bring worlds together and encourages creators of all backgrounds, modes and races to create videos. In addition, Dubsmash only collects functional information to improve the app, but no personal data from users.

4. Triller

Triller is made for creators. As with the other TikTok alternatives from this list, the app allows you to record videos and then edit them. Triller, however, has a big advantage up its sleeve: the app automatically post-edits videos.

Based on an algorithm, the TikTok alternative makes a proposal in terms of post-processing. Of course you can still customize this first version via effects, animations, lip syncs and other options. Unlike the other TikTok alternatives, the idea is that you don’t watch Triller videos in the app, but share them via other social media such as Instagram and Facebook.

Turbulent times for TikTok

TikTok is currently growing very fast, but that is not without a struggle. The originally Chinese app has recently been more and more negative in the news. For example, iOS 14, the new iPhone software update of 2020, revealed that the app is secretly looking at what is on your iPhone’s clipboard.
