Handy: Prevent Safari from automatically opening downloaded files

If Safari is the browser of choice on your Mac, you’ve probably noticed that downloaded files open automatically. iPhoned shows you how to prevent this.

Automatically open files by Safari

Safari is the default browser on Mac for many users and is constantly used to download documents, images or other files. However, when you download a file, it will automatically open in a program that can handle the file. And that is annoying, because programs are constantly being opened, while sometimes you only start working with the file later.

Handy: Prevent Safari from automatically opening downloaded files

However, it is simple to prevent downloaded files from opening automatically. In the steps below, we’ll show you how.

  1. Open Safari on your Mac (Book) and go to the menu bar at the top;
  2. Click on Safari (bold) and choose the option ‘Preferences …’;
  3. Then open the General tab on the left;
  4. Disable the option ‘Open safe files after download’ at the bottom.

From now on, downloaded files will not be opened directly in a program, but you can decide for yourself when you see a document, film or image for the first time.
