Meeting each other is now easier than ever thanks to Google Maps location sharing. In this tip you can read all about sharing your location live via Google’s map app.
Share your Google Maps location live
Knowing if someone is on the way, meeting or checking whether your child has arrived home safely; the ‘location sharing’ function comes in handy at several times. Fortunately, Google has made it easy to turn this on and off. Keep in mind that you have location sharing turned on, otherwise the function will not work. Google Maps will ask for permission to do this when you want to share your location for the first time. It also does not (yet) work in the desktop version, but only on mobile.
There are several ways you can share your location live. For example, you can invite people from the app or create a link to share. As soon as you turn on the function, the invitees will see your photo appear in a circle on the card. You can also see whether you are walking or in the car.
You activate the Google Maps location sharing as follows:
- Open Google Maps and tap the menu icon in the top left corner;
- Choose ‘Share Location’ and ‘Get Started’;
- Set the time for how long your location can be seen;
- Invite people by tapping ‘Select People’ or ‘Message’.
Your location will now be shared live with the invited people. Turning off the function is very easy: simply switch the switch at the bottom of the screen from blue to gray to get your live location from the map.
By simultaneously sharing your location with a friend’s, it’s easy to meet up somewhere. You simply walk towards each other on the map and see exactly how long it will take until the other is with you.
