Sometimes it is a good idea to reset your Google Chromecast. Hopefully this will solve the problem you’re running into. Otherwise, it is useful to know when you want to sell it or if you have bought a second-hand version yourself. That’s how you work.
Fortunately, resetting a Chromecast is easy. It will only take you a few minutes, if at all. In some cases, a problem can be solved by rebooting the system (unplug, plug in). If that is not sufficient, we will move on to the rest. You will then go back to factory settings. Then keep in mind that you have to reset the dongle, but that also happened in no time.
Reset Chromecast: Option 1
You can reset the Chromecast in two ways. The first option involves using the physical reset button on the device. It’s a small button on the side. You have to press that button and hold it for about 25 seconds. You can stop pressing the moment the LED light starts flashing.
Then we’re not there yet. Then it is the intention to also pull the plug from the socket. Usually you only need to do this for one per second. But in most cases, a limit of at least thirty seconds is recommended, as you would do with your router, for example. When you put the plug in the socket again, you know for sure that the Chromecast has been reset to factory settings.
Reset Chromecast: Option 2
You can also reset the Chromecast via the Google Home app. You then proceed as follows.
- Open the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet
- Find the Chromecast you want to reset (we use Chromecast Ultra on the screenshots)
- Open that Chromecast by tapping on it and tap on the gear in the top right
- Now tap the three dots in the top right and select Factory reset
- Confirm your choice by pressing the wide, blue button
Watch out. Because the option to reset within the app is only available when the Chromecast in question is connected to the same network like your smart phone. So if you have bought a second-hand model, you can only use option 1.
Install Chromecast
After the reboot, just follow the instructions presented on the screen. It does not matter which method you have chosen. If you can’t figure it out, Google has a interactive installation page created for you.
