I have a pond with about fifteen frogs in it. With a lot of effort I can catch 5 during the day, but the next day 6 new ones have been added. At night they croak and this is a call for other frogs. My neighbors and I really can’t sleep anymore.
Is it because the frogs hibernate in the mud? Do I have to clean? Or switch on more running water (fountains)? Or is there a fish species that scares off frogs? Or plants?
Answer
Dear Jacques,
The frogs you hear croaking in the summer are usually green frogs. These, like all other amphibians and reptiles in Belgium, are protected. So under no circumstances should you kill them. Moving them won’t help much either. The green frog is a migratory species. So there will always be new frogs in your pond. If you really want to get rid of it, you have to get rid of the pond. But I wouldn’t.
The frogs also have their good sides. The fact that they come to your pond indicates that your pond is healthy. Moreover, the green frogs eat a lot of insects. They therefore give a bit of noise in the summer months, but ensure that you are less bothered by stinging insects.
You often get used to the noise after a while and otherwise you can put in earplugs to sleep.
That helped me anyway.
