How did people discover plate tectonics?

And what evidence is there for plate tectonics?

Asker: Spring, 17 years

Answer

Dear Spring

100 years ago, the meteorologist Alfred Wegener laid the foundations for the modern concept of plate tectonics: he then developed the hypothesis of continental drift. Unfortunately for him, he was then unable to give a good explanation for the movements of the continents. A more or less conclusive explanation did not follow until the 1960s, when the structure of the ocean floor had been extensively studied and it became clear that new crust is continuously being formed at the submarine ridges. The Amoeba People have composed a beautiful ode to Wegener.

For more information about plate tectonics, I refer you to Wikipedia, where most of the arguments and evidence are briefly discussed.
