How do I convert hectares to square kilometers?

100 hectares = 1 km². Now 1 hectare = 100 * 100 meters, how come 10 hectares = 100 000 m² – while if you put your 10 hectares in 1 large square then you have 1000 meters by 1000 meters which corresponds to 1 km by 1 km – is not equal on 1,000,000m² or 1km²?

Answer

Ten hectares is 10 * 100 * 100 meters = 100 000 meters. If you want to make a square with that, what is the side?

For a square, the area is the square of the side, so the side is the square root of the area, which is the square root of 100,000:

root(100 000) = 316.23 meters

Ten hectares that form a square give a square with a side of 316.23 meters, not 1000 meters.

Conversion : 1 square kilometer = 100 hectares. So 1 hectare = 0.01 square kilometer.

So 10 hectares = 0.1 square kilometers. After all, if you lay ten hectares in a row, you get a strip of 1 km long and 100 m wide.
