Answer
People have been using names for a long time. We don’t know if the prehistoric people used names because they didn’t write anything down. That’s why we can’t know anymore. But ever since people started writing (which is 5000 years ago!) we know that people use names. So probably people used names before that too. But people didn’t have fixed surnames like we do now. People only had a first name and sometimes a nickname. 200 years ago there was a man, Napoleon, who believed that people should have first and last names and that they should be written down. Only then did people have a first and last name as it is now.
