If I fly in a straight path to the sun and I land on the sun, how many kilometers have I traveled?
Answer
The distance from the earth to the sun is not always the same but fluctuates during the year. Earth is closest to the sun on January 4. The distance is then 147 million kilometers. At the beginning of July, the distance is greatest: 152 million kilometers. On average, the distance from the Sun is 149 598 000 km.
Now you may think: “that is impossible, because in winter it is colder than in summer !”
However, the seasons are not caused by this small difference in distance, but by the fact that the Earth’s axis of rotation is not perpendicular to the orbital plane. The earth is always tilted slightly. In summer, the Earth keeps the Northern Hemisphere (where we live) tilted a little toward the sun, and tilted a little more away from the sun in winter. That is why it is warmer in the northern hemisphere in summer than in winter. In the southern hemisphere it is the other way around.
