Some questions:
– how many km² of forest is there (still) in Flanders?
– how much forest disappears per year in this region or is it planted?
-Will Flanders ever fall without forest if the logging does not stop? It’s a shame that the forest would disappear everywhere. This is also true for the animals that live in it.
Answer
the area of forest in Flanders is approximately 150,000 hectares, ie 1500 square kilometres. This means 0.025 hectares of forest per inhabitant, which is very low compared to neighboring countries. At least 40% of this area is production forests where biodiversity is rather low. The wood stock is more than 250 m3 per hectare high compared to France or the Netherlands. You can read about this in the nature reports of INBO (www.inbo.be), the recent scenario report of 2009 also predicts the area of forest under various policy choices.
