How the Apple Pencil Hover function works for iPad Pro and iPad Air

The iPad Air with M2 chip, iPad Pro with M2 chip or newer have a function specifically for Apple smart stylus. With Apple Pencil Hover you can use the stylus even more precisely during your creative pursuits.

The Apple Pencil is detected up to 12mm above the display on this iPad, so you can preview your edits before making them. This way you can sketch and illustrate even more accurately and use Apple Pencil even more easily. We explain exactly how the function works.

Suitable devices

The Apple Pencil Hover feature does not work on all iPad models. For example, you must have an iPad Air with M2 chip, iPad Pro with M2 chip or newer. Also, only the Apple Pencil 2nd generation or Apple Pencil Pro supports this feature.

Dot on the screen

If you have a suitable iPad and Apple Pencil, you can use the Apple Pencil Hover function. This becomes active as soon as you use the Pencil. You will see a dot on the screen when the tip is within 12 mm of the screen.

If you hold the Apple Pencil above the display, the electromagnetic signals from the tip above the screen are received. The processor immediately registers these signals and recognizes the position of the Apple Pencil in three dimensions.

Benefits of Apple Pencil Hover

Apple Pencil hover shows you in advance exactly where your Apple Pencil will end up on the display. You can write, sketch and illustrate with even more precision. Apps and widgets on the home screen expand when you hover over them with the tip of the Pencil.

You can see how thick your line will be, or how colors will mix before you start painting. With Apple Pencil hover everything is even easier because you immediately see a preview without touching the screen.
