How to enable LED notifications on your iPhone

LED notification is not a standard notification option on iPhones. Still, you can set it. We show you how to enable LED notifications on your iPhone.

Enable LED notifications on your iPhone

To make the iPhone an accessible smartphone for the deaf and hard of hearing, Apple has added the option to receive a LED notification. When you get a notification, your iPhone flashes via the flash of the camera on the back. In addition to the flash notification, your phone keeps the vibrate function. The function is useful when you do not want to disturb other attendees with noise or buzzing in your pocket or on the table.

This way of receiving notifications is only a bit more hidden in the Settings app. You set up LED notifications in these four steps:

  1. Open Settings;
  2. Go to ‘General’ and then ‘Accessibility’;
  3. Scroll to the heading ‘Hearing’ and tap on ‘LED flash on notification’;
  4. Set the slider to green. Do you also want a LED notification when your iPhone is on silent? Then also select ‘Flash when the sound is switched off’.

Bright flash

Please note: the LED flash is quite bright. It is therefore especially useful if your iPhone is a bit further away, and not completely in your field of view. Then the flash can be quite annoying for your eyes. When notified, your iPhone flashes only once.

So the flash will not keep blinking until you have viewed the notification or your phone is unlocked. When you put your iPhone on the table, it is therefore useful to place it with the back side up. This way you will not miss out on notifications.
